A Kitchen Built Around Old Wood.

A custom kitchen remodel in Douglassville, PA — the home's original farmhouse floor joists exposed overhead, weathered cabinetry, and a deep-red china cabinet anchoring the room.

Original farmhouse joists exposed overhead, the home's original wide-plank floors brought back to life underfoot, and cabinetry made to look like it had quietly done its job for decades. A custom kitchen that reads as restoration even though most of it is new.

Vaulted ceilings, an iron-and-candle chandelier, and the home's original farmhouse floor joists exposed overhead. A kitchen that quietly looks older than it is.

The brief was an old-soul kitchen — a working family room that feels like it has always been there. We delivered it with reclaimed-look cabinetry in milk-paint white and weathered finishes, antique iron hardware on every glass-front door, a deep-red china cabinet that anchors one wall, and a soapstone farmhouse sink built into a sage-green base.

When we opened up the ceiling, we found the home's original farmhouse floor joists waiting overhead — and we kept them exposed running the length of the vaulted space, paired with an oversized iron-and-candle chandelier. Underfoot, the original wide-plank floors had been buried under layer after layer of newer flooring; we pulled all of it back down to the originals and had them refinished. The cooking line sits beneath a custom hood, with glass-front cabinet doors throughout.

The result is a kitchen that doesn't feel like a remodel at all. It feels like the room it always should have been.
